- The oval shield was originally part of a 'ceremonial armor set' (equipaggio di pompa) which, as evidenced by the coat of arms, belonged to the Venetian Francesco Bernardo, Captain of Bergamo between 1552 and 1553. The city itself probably gifted the set to the captain as a token of gratitude for the services he rendered, specifically regarding his intervention in 1553 in a delicate tax matter involving the dues owed by the Territory of Bergamo (Contado) to the Serenissima (the Republic of Venice). https://www.museibologna.it/medievale/schede/incontri-arrivi-1-lo-scudo-del-capitano-francesco-bernardo-1996-2414/
